The Tawny Owls have been learning that Christian's believe in The Creation Story and what this entails. Today they created a collage picture of the world - the children could remember the elements that they had to include, which Christian's say God made.
We have access again this year to Times Table Rockstars.
Your child will be bringing home a personal log-in for either NumBots (EYFS AND Key Stage 1) or Times Table Rockstars (Key Stage 2). Times Table Rockstars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times table practice. NumBots supports children with their understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction so they move from counting to calculating. Please support your child to log into their account. Regular practice really is key to your child making progress in these areas. On Monday we celebrated National Fitness Day by dressing as a sports person/character or by wearing PE kit. We also raised money for KitAid - Kit for Africa so we can post old sports kits to a worthy cause. It was great to see the variety of sports the children are interested in.
To mark the start of the new academic year, every child in the school read the book 'The Dot' and painted their own dot. The Dot, written by Peter Reynolds, is a wonderful picture book that encourages children to try new or challenging things, to explore their creativity and to have confidence in their abilities. A great book to spark discussions about our ambitions as individuals and a school for the coming year. We look forward to seeing all of the children flourish this year just like the character in the book.
The Snowy Owls enjoyed a workshop run by Sally from Devon Waste Management. The children explored renewable and non-renewable materials and the impact of each on our environment. The Snowy Owls learnt actions to remind themselves and their families to 'Recycle, Reuse and Reduce!' The children were surprised to see how some materials have been reused for example old jeans made into pencils and nappies into roof tiles!
Barn Owls had a visit from Devon Wildlife Trust where they focused on mammals. They identified what makes an animal a mammal, what mammals would we find in the grounds of Bridestowe Primary School and how would we know they had been there? They then completed an activity ‘Poodunnit’ and had to match paw prints to photos of animals – two ways in which we could know if an animal had been near without seeing them.
They ended the session playing ‘Bat and Moth’ using the technique of a bat’s echo detection to help catch the moth. Barn Owls looked at recycled materials and talked about the meanings renewable and non-renewable, infinite vs finite and matched raw materials with the end products. They also looked at different items and identified what recycled resources they were made from.
The Owlets had a visit from Pirate Pat who took them on a swashbuckling adventure to find marine animals that needed help. They learnt the important message of reduce, reuse and recycle and the impact it can have on our marine animals if we let rubbish into the oceans.
As part of Recycle Week, the Tawny Owls took part in an engaging workshop where they learnt about the properties of materials (linked to their Science topic) and how to recycle them. During the workshop, they sorted a variety of rubbish, created their own fridge magnets and did some role play. They thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt a great deal!
The Tawny Owls painted some beautiful artwork ready for a whole school display. This art was based on the story, 'The Dot' which is about a little girls journey of surprise and self-discovery.
The year one children have been exploring their new classroom environment. They have particularly enjoyed their outdoor learning space!
As part of our PSHE, we explored democracy. Children presented a speech to the class as to why they should be elected for the various positions within our school. We are proud to have new School Councillors, Sport Councillors and Wildlife Champions. Children gave ambitious speeches and listened to one another with respect.
We talked about our school ethos ‘With Respect and Ambition we Flourish together’. The children came up with ideas of what they thought the 3 different words mean. We also created class rules and the children made links to our ethos with their ideas.
