After watching the Obamas read 'The Word Collector' by Peter H Reynolds in assembly last week and discussing the importance of words and reading. The children were tasked with thinking about a word that they like, has sparked an interest in or discussion with, whilst they read at home. They then had to wear the word to school on World Book Day.
It was fantastic to see such a variety of words used and discussed. As we know, words have power and they are like keys. If you choose them right, they can open up the world and change your life. Therefore, in the words of Roald Dahl, ''Don't gobblefunk around with words.'' The picture below is made up of the words collected and shared, as you can see there was a real mix! The Tawny's enjoyed an afternoon in the rain with Ranger Rob this week. They looked at how to make a shelter from severe weather, which could help save their life.
Words matter and the right words words matter most of all!
Exploring words in school today - thinking and talking about words is really interesting! In Forest School this week Snowy Owls learnt how to shelter from the elements - we had the perfect weather to test. They then enjoyed s'mores by the camp fire to warm up.
Snowy Owl's learnt about a dog's five senses and how these make a dog think and feel.. They also learnt different strategies of how to ensure a dog feels safe and happy.
We had a whole school assembly from Emily from Dogs Trust. All the children listened well and engaged with the information they were being taught. They all came out knowing a safe way to approach a new dog.
Emily from the Dogs Trust came to visit the whole school today. The Tawny Owls workshop taught them the 5 rules to keeping a dog happy and them safe. The children all enjoyed taking part in role play scenarios and learnt a great deal.
The Tawny Owls had a great DT session this week, learning about the differences between fruit and vegetables. They got to sample some foods that they may not have previously been able to, which they all enjoyed! This learning will lead on to them designing, making and evaluating smoothies.
Barn Owls spent the day on Dartmoor, between Sourton Tor and Widgery Cross, navigating and exploring. The compass work built on understanding from having studied magnetism last half-term. It was a bitter day, but everyone warmed up once we properly got going. The children tried out a survival shelter, which was extremely effective in keeping the wind off. Having such clear weather gave us fantastic views across to Bridestowe and Cornwall, and enhanced visibility when identifying landmarks and features of the terrain. Barn Owls have been continuing to work on their skills in tennis, this week working on aiming shots and returning. The children have practised their 'ready' stance, and built on that by adding their forehand and backhand positions.
As part of our Geography this half term we are learning about the weather. This week we learnt about the different components which make up the weather. To help remember them all we created actions.
